The Harsh Reality

To begin, a leader will often not be blamed for another failed effort to drive change or transformation when they hire the ‘best and most expensive consultant’. After all, the name brand consultants constantly remind us they are the best, and they are essential to a successful change or transformation effort.

However, not everything ‘they’ tell you is the truth.  The harsh reality is that over 70% of transformation efforts fail to meet their objectives.  Imagine … 70%.  That means 7 out of 10 investments that your organization made FAILED to meet expectations.  They were a waste of time, scarce resources, created unmet expectations, and distracted everyone.

Not good.  Wouldn’t it be great if you actually succeeded in implementing the change you want and need?

Reality Check

To dive into some of my past experience, at Prudential we did the transformation work ourselves.  We invested in hiring people who had specific and proven capabilities, dedicated people who were devoted to ongoing change efforts.  Then, we trained new and old staff together in what and how to continuously drive change.  This was essential to all of our transformation efforts.

The key takeaway is we consistently included the staff in what and how to change and transform their segment of the business. Specifically, we provided both face-to-face and virtual education around change. The next step is to show how change will be implemented within their organization and energize everyone by including their creative input.

Lessons Learned

Over the last five years, we have learned a lot about Business Transformation. Failure is a great motivator. We have taken four elements of Transformation which capture the lessons learned from SUCCESSFUL efforts. Check out this video called The Discipline of Business Transformation to learn more.

Common Approach

As a tool to use in your efforts, here is a binding and aligning mechanism in transformation. It is a framework that can be applied across all change and transformation efforts in a common and consistent manner. Find out more with this recent paper on Business Transformation 2.0, this is a true framework to business transformation at no cost!

With this, you ensure that everyone from the CEO to the newest hired intern is aligned around where the transformation is headed (and why), what is changing (and how it affects each person AND the customer) and finally each person role in the continues transformation (from a participant, a core team member, or a leader/champion).

A Final Word

In conclusion, Business Transformation is NOT a thing that is planned and gets done.  To remain relevant and competitive in today’s new normal, every organization must develop its ability to continuously transform themselves.

Rather than looking at transformation as an exhausting commitment, think about it as a strategic asset.  Organizations, leaders, and their people who can adapt and lead in the midst of constant change and disruption will not just survive but thrive.

Success principles are like any other discipline, a mindset.  A mindset that is taught by experts.  People who have walked the path before you and have implemented successful change.
